Faculty & Students Present at Math Association Meeting
Converse faculty and students attended the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) Southeastern Section Meeting in March 2024 at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
Associate Professor of Mathematics and Dean of the School of Business & Data Science, Dr. Jessica Sorrells, presented “p-Norm Approval Voting.” This presentation reported preliminary results from her work on a project analyzing extensions of a voting method called “Quadratic Voting.”
Sydney Wilson ’24, a Mathematics and Computer Science double major, and Caleb Chang ’25, a Mathematics major, delivered their presentation “DNA Self-Assembly Design of Bunk Bed Graphs.”
Rosa Linda Cortez ’25, a Mathematics major, Jordyn Rose ’24, a Mathematics and Biochemistry major, and Sofia Giraldo Jimenez ’26 (Nisbet Honors) a Biochemistry major), delivered their poster presentation, “Modeling Self-Assembly of DNA Nanostructures Resembling Bipartite Graphs.”
These projects were completed as part of Dr. Jessica Sorrells’ January 2024 course, Mathematical Design of DNA Nanostructures. This class functioned as a course-based research experience, with students learning relevant background material in the first two weeks of the course and conducting original research in the second two weeks.
This was the first time Sofia Giraldo Jimenez, Jordyn Rose, and Rosalinda Cortez had traveled to an academic conference. This was Caleb Chang’s first time presenting at a conference.
This student experience is possible thanks to the generous support of Converse’s Student Government Association, the Nisbet Honors Program, and the Provost’s Office.
